Most certified PADI Rescue Divers look back on their rescue training as one of the most challenging – sometimes demanding – and therefore most rewarding programs they’ve taken. The subject is serious, but the training is fun.
Getting the Most Out of the PADI Rescue
Designed to offer flexibility for application in different locations and by people with differing abilities, the PADI Rescue Diver course consists of two basic learning divisions: knowledge development and water skills (rescue training exercises and open water rescue scenarios). Knowledge development covers the principles and foundational information that you’ll apply in the course. You’ll complete knowledge development with your independent study, discussions in briefings and/or classroom sessions.
During the rescue training exercises, you apply your knowledge as you develop and practice rescue skills. Each exercise begins by introducing new skills. As you demonstrate capability with the skills, your instructor will integrate them with what you’ve already learned by running practice drills that simulate various conditions and situations. This teaches you to think before you act, and to adapt what you’re learning to the variables of each situation, such as your physical attributes, the victim’s size, the environment and conditions, and so on.
After you’ve successfully completed the knowledge development and rescue training exercise portions of the course, you’ll transition to the open water rescue scenarios. The scenarios take place at one or more open water dive sites typical of your local environment.
Each scenario simulates aspects of an emergency similar to what you could face in the local environment. Your instructor will try to make the scenarios as realistic as reasonably possible, giving you the opportunity to apply what you’ve learned in realistic circumstances. After successfully completing the scenarios, you’ll have earned the PADI Rescue Diver certification.
